A lot of people believe that, just like dancing, acting, singing, painting and other such arts, even writing is an art that you are born with. And more often than not, a lot of writers will call themselves natural writers.

While a lot of people are naturally good at writing, there are others that struggle to pen down a sentence even.

But very few of that latter category of people actually know that the art of good writing can also be developed.

How?

Through diligent, religious practice.

Just like skeletal and cardiac muscles, even writing is a muscle- The more you practice it, the sharper it gets.

For which, here are the things that you will need:

Ideas and thoughts

Ideas and thoughts are the essence of writing. Because, without them, what and what will you even write about!!

Command over language

Pick a language that you want to write into. while you do, make sure you are comfortable with it. You should be able to think, write, speak and understand the language. Remember that if ideas and thoughts are your foundation then language is your home.

Sharpen your language communication- so much so that you can play around with words and sentences to communicate your ideas.

Have a writing schedule

Write. Write. Write.

No matter however good or bad you write, just write regularly- If possible, write every day. Then proofread what you write. Read, rewrite, read, re-read and improvise until you think that your written piece is at its best place.

Take second opinions

After you make sure your written piece is well rounded, ask your friends, families and acquaintances to read and provide their valuable feedback to you. Here, make sure that they at least know the context of what you have written. They should be able to judge not only with respect to language, grammar or representation but also with respect to the idea that you are trying to communicate.

Their compliments will build your confidence and their criticism will sharpen your writing, so welcome both. While you take ahead on your journey to become your better version than yesterday, make sure you don’t lose your authenticity.

For developing ideas, you can use writing cues.

For bettering grammar, you can use tools like Grammarly

For better sentence representation, you can use tools like Hemmingway and/or Grammarly

Be disciplined

Maintain a discipline. You can design your patterns and schedule however you like it, but the key point is to stick with it. While you stick with it, make sure you are flexible to break through it and make a new one. ;)

Have patience

Patience. Writing is an art, it will get better with time. It may take days, weeks, months and even years. Be patient to give yourself the motivation and time to be better each day. Practice diligently and meanwhile, have fun.

Lastly, read, read, read… read as much as you can. It will enhance your ideas, power your imagination and strengthen your vocabulary.

Remember: Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.

So don’t mind those “natural” writers and keep doing your hard work. Of course, learn from them but don’t let it make you nervous.

If you really want to master the writing, don’t worry, you’ll get there.
